The Environmental Zone of Berlin (blue)
On 07.10.2019, the city of Berlin decided to ban diesel vehicles on 8 roads of the capital. The traffic restriction will affect a total of 2.9 km of roads with approx. 1,300 residents. EURO 0-5 vehicles will be banned from the following roads: Leipziger Straße, Brückenstraße, Reinhardtstraße, Alt-Moabit, Friedrichstraße, Stromstraße, Hermannstraße, Silbersteinstraße.
From 07.10.2019, all diesel vehicles of any type that do not comply with the EURO standard 6 will be excluded from traffic. More severe restrictions are already planned for the unspecified future. Then also EURO 6b and 6c vehicles will be banned from traffic, and thus only EURO 6d temp vehicles may drive through these roads and/or road sections.
In addition, a speed limit of 30 km/h 24 hours a day and 7 days a week will be imposed to further reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides.
Excluded from the currently planned driving bans are police, ambulances, fire brigade and military, as well as residents and their visitors, both private and business.
Following the Federal Administrative Court’s decision on 27.02.2018, diesel driving restrictions can be legally imposed by German cities and municipalities.
Individual streets or whole areas can become diesel restriction zones. These diesel restriction zones (blue zones) can affect different EURO standards and vehicle types and can even be time-limited.

The Blue Badge for Diesel Restriction Zones
In Germany, the Blue Badge might be introduced in 2020. It is required to access diesel restriction zones.
In 2020, cities and communities will introduce driving restrictions for various EURO classes of diesel vehicles. Therefore, the Blue Badge becomes a need in order to distinguish older diesel vehicles and EURO classes as well as petrol vehicles without particle filter from vehicles with a lower emission of pollutants.
